Fifth Grade Art
Our fifth grade artists will spend the year studying art and artists from the United States. We will look at some of the most famous art movements and artists, including Native American potter Maria Martinez, Pop Artists Warhol, Thiebaud & Oldenburg, Abstract artist Frank Stella and Environmental artist Robert Wyland (who, along with students, painted the ocean mural across from the art room). We will make both individual and collaborative works of art and will use many different materials to create our pieces. -Mrs. Benner
Maria Martinez
Native American Artist
MARIA MARTINEZ WAS A PUEBLO INDIAN FROM NEW MEXICO. SHE CARRIED ON A TRIBAL TRADITION OF MAKING COIL POTS. STUDENTS LEARNED HOW SHE MADE HER CLAY WITH MATERIALS FROM THE EARTH AND HOW SHE ROLLED COILS TO MAKE HER BEAUTIFUL POTTERY.
Students will build their own coil pots by rolling coils, scoring and slipping to attach.
Wyland and environmental/public art
Leesville Elementary was lucky enough to have Wyland come to our school and paint a mural with students in 1998. This mural can be located across from the art room.
